Songs and humor make AIDS musical worth seeing

Zero Patience

Directed by John Greyson Cleveland Cinematheque

I expect that there will be quite a few skeptics when the movie musical Zero Pa-

movie.

Greyson turns the tables by making "Patient Zero" (who early on was believed by scientists to have brought AIDS to America) the hero, and drug companies, government researchers and the press the villains. Patient Zero comes back to life through the bubbly waters of a bathhouse Jacuzzi. The "rebirth"

trol" being my favorite) and a bit of skin and nuttiness keep this movie alive but don't overshadow the main message: AIDS is here, AIDS kills, there is no one to blame (and no need to) and drug companies are getting very rich off of AIDS, selling drugs that may not even work.

In one scene, Burton and Patient Zero are looking at Zero's blood sample through a microscope and see "Miss HIV" and others swimming around with tablets on their heads. I was prepared for a rousing rendition of "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz," but instead, they sang about the powerful HIV and how it has

never been scientifically proven to cause AIDS. It's zany, but it gets the point across.

This movie may get boring if you're not a musical lover (near the end I was thinking "Please, don't start singing."), but go see it anyway. After all, variety is the spice of life.

Shows are Friday, November 4 at 9:10 pm and Saturday, November 5 at 7:30p pm. The Cinematheque is in the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Blvd, in Univeristy Circle; 216-421-7450.

Three Shower Guys (I. to r.: David Gale, Charles Azulay, Howard Rosenstein) sing 'Pop A Boner', a barbershop ditty about bathouse etiquette in Zero Patience.

tience sings its way across the Cinematheque screen next Friday and Saturday. A musical about AIDS? What is there to sing about? Plenty.

Canadian writer/director John Greyson (Urinal and The Making of Monster) gives us an absurd, whimsical view of sex. Have you ever seen buttholes talk? You will in this

metaphor was hokey, but very appropriate. Zero eventually runs into Victorian explorer/sexologist Richard Burton, who is currently videotaping a documentary about the origin of AIDS for the "Hall of Contagion"; a new exhibit for the history museum where he works.
